Fitness to Practise

It is a General Medical Council (GMC) requirement that, when a University places the names of students on a pass list to graduate for the degrees of MBChB, the University is confirming that those students are fit to practise. (Paragraph 16 of the GMC’s guidance Professional behaviour and fitness to practise, 2016).

In order to be deemed fit to practise, medical students must comply with the standards, principles and values outlined in the GMC’s guidance, Achieving good medical practice, 2024.

The Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health has a Fitness to Practise Procedure to consider matters where the health and/or conduct of a student on the MBChB Programme (or other healthcare Programmes) gives rise to concern about their fitness to practise and/or suitability in connection with that Programme and/or registration with the relevant professional regulator.

Under this Procedure, any member of staff who is concerned about a student’s health or conduct can refer them to a Concern Review Panel. The CRP will determine what outcome is appropriate, including whether or not the student is required to attend a Fitness to Practise Committee, at either School or Faculty level.

Fitness to Practise Committees make a decision on whether a student’s fitness to practise is impaired, and can impose any of the outcomes described in the relevant section of the Procedure linked above.
