Potential Conflict of Interests
You should not normally have a family member or a personal/family friend as a supervisor, tutor, adviser or examiner in any area of the Programme. This is to ensure that a supervisor is not in a position of having a conflict of interests, which could lead to him/her treating you unduly harshly or leniently with regard to programme requirements. If you are aware of any reason why your potential supervisor/tutor/adviser/examiner could be placed in a situation in which a conflict of interests may emerge, you must contact the Teaching and Learning Manager in the first instance. Failure to declare a potential or actual conflict of interests will be treated as a professionalism issue, which could result in a referral to the Faculty Fitness to Practise Procedure.
Information on GMC Registration (Primary Medical Qualification)
At the end of the Undergraduate Programme you will receive your MB ChB (or equivalent) degree, which is a primary medical qualification (PMQ). Holding a PMQ entitles you to provisional registration with the General Medical Council, subject only to its acceptance that there are no Fitness to Practise concerns that need consideration. Provisional registration is time limited to a maximum of three years and 30 days (1125 days in total). After this time period your provisional registration will normally expire.
Provisional registration with the GMC will enable you to submit an application to the UK Foundation Programme which is a two-year structured programme (FY1 and FY2) of workplace-based learning for junior doctors that forms a bridge between medical school and speciality training. Provisionally GMC registered doctors can only practise in approved FY1 posts: The law does not allow provisionally registered doctors to undertake any other type of work. To obtain a FY1 post you will need to apply during the final year of your Undergraduate Programme through the UK Foundation Programme Office selection scheme, which allocates these posts to graduates on a competitive basis.
Successful completion of the FY1 is normally achieved within 12 months and is marked by the award of a Certificate of Completion. You will then be eligible to apply for full registration with the General Medical Council. You need full registration with a licence to practise for unsupervised medical practice in the NHS or private practice in the UK.
