The opportunity to re-sit an examination is not a right. The Programme may refuse a student a re-sit opportunity, for example, should a student have failed to meet the minimum work and attendance requirements.

Marks will be capped at ‘Satisfactory’ for all reassessments taken as a second attempt.

Failure to pass a re-sit assessment being taken as a second attempt will result in exclusion from the MBChB Programme.

Year 1 and Year 2 Re-Sits (Reassessment)

Re-sit examinations for Year 1 and Year 2 are normally held in June (CCA) and July (Semester Tests and PEP).

There will be opportunities for students to resit the Y1 or Y2 PEP. The requirements for this are dependent on the reason for undertaking a resit – full details can be found on the Y1 PEP and Y2 PEP 1Med pages.

If you fail the Semester Test in January, you are normally allowed to proceed into the next semester of study, providing you were not re-sitting these examinations.

Any student who needs to re-sit an examination is encouraged to make an appointment to see a senior member of the Years 1 and 2 academic team for study skills support (See Contacts In Years 1 and 2). Help is best sought immediately after the results are published and will be offered for those components of the examination that led to the failure to satisfy the examiners.

GEM Year Re-sits (Reassessment)

Re-sit examinations for the GEM KUR test will typically be held in June and the GEM CCA in July.

Year 4 Re-Sits (Reassessment)

There are re-sit opportunities for the CCAs in July.

Year 5 Reassessment

Students are permitted to have up to four valid attempts of MLA assessments. Both the AKT and CCA must be passed within the same academic year. Students who have not achieved a pass in both assessments within the four valid attempt allowance will be excluded from the Programme even if there are remaining valid attempts for one of the components.

All attempts are valid and count towards the maximum number of four permitted attempts, unless an attempt is nullified by the school as a consequence of:
–  accepted mitigating circumstances or
– a successful appeal

In relation to the AKT: where a student sits the first paper and is unable to sit the second paper, for any reason, the student will be deemed to have failed that attempt of the AKT. However, that attempt may be voided if the reason they did not sit the second paper is accepted by the Mitigating Circumstances Panel.

Students can submit if needed mitigating circumstances for all Y5 assessments except for the PSA given national delivery of these exams. However, we will allow students 4 attempts of the PSA (no more than 2 sittings in an academic year) .

Other Year 5 Assessments including QEPEP and Clinical Placements still follow a maximum of two permitted attempts. Therefore a further Unsatisfactory outcome at second attempt in either of these assessments will result in exclusion from the Programme, regardless of the number of valid attempts remaining of the MLA components.

As a general principle, whilst the number of attempts differ across the different Y5 assessments, exhaustion of attempts for any one component will result in exclusion even if there are attempts remaining of other components.

Successful Mitigation of an Unsatisfactory Resit Assessment

A student who successfully mitigates an Unsatisfactory outcome in a resit assessment will be permitted to repeat the year in order to have a further opportunity to re-take this assessment. They will be required to retake the year in its entirety including all assessments (and clinical placements in Years 3-5) as per the details outlined in the Progression pages. The attempt status of the mitigated resit will be carried forward into the repeat year.
