In Year 5 you will sit the National MLA Applied Knowledge Test. This will take the form of two papers, that although will be sat in separate sittings across two days, will be treated as one paper with your total score being used to decide on overall outcome.

The AKT forms one part of the UK Medical Licensing Assessment. It is designed by the UK Medical School Council (MSC) and is delivered by each medical school. As such, aspects such as the exam content and pass mark are decided nationally whilst other aspects such as mitigating circumstances, reasonable adjustments and appeals will still be handled by the medical school.

The AKT will be sat as an electronic assessment, on-campus under invigilated closed-book conditions using the MSCAA Exam-Write e-assessment platform. Paper delivery is not permitted as per national MSC AKT Policy,

Each AKT paper uses 100 Single Best Answer questions (taken over 2 hours) that are of the same format and standard as the Progress Test questions that Manchester students will be very familiar with. Students’ performance across both papers (i.e. on the full 200 items) will determine their overall score and grade.

Results

2-3 weeks following the AKT, students will be provided, via the national MSC platform, with a binary pass/fail outcome alongside a breakdown of performance by area of clinical performance. We will also provide, using our usual systems, your exam grade which is determined as follows:

Distinction	>	Mean + 2 St Dev
Honours	>	Mean + 1 St Dev
Satisfactory	>	Midway of National Pass Mark and Mean
Low Pass	>	National Pass Mark
Unsatisfactory	<	National Pass Mark
