Medical students are actively involved in all aspects of the MBChB, from Programme design to delivery. The Student Representation Team is made up of five Programme reps; Year reps, including a Foundation Year rep; a Graduate Entry (GEM) rep; an International rep; a European Studies rep; an Intercalation rep and a Direct entry rep. Student representatives are elected by students when more than one student volunteers for the role. More Information can be found below and on 1MedBuzz.

Student representatives will also routinely be asked to join the various working parties set up to modify and improve the Programme, to ensure that students really do have a say in decision making.

Programme Reps

There are  five Programme reps, one for each of the four Clinical Education Campuses and one for Primary Care.

The Programme reps are members of the key committees for the MBChB Programme.

Year Reps

If you have a concern about the way the Programme is run, the most effective way of raising this is via your year rep. If you have a view shared by a number of other students, your year rep will discuss this with the relevant semester or year lead.

It is important to remember that you should be prepared to be accountable for issues that you raise. You must remember that, as doctors in training, you should be professional in your dealings with both staff and student colleagues, and be polite in your criticism and constructive if possible.

The Year 1 and Year 2 reps consult with a nominated representatives from each small learning groups and meet regularly with the Years 1 and 2 Academic Year Leads to discuss matters relevant to each year group.

The GEM rep will meet regularly with the Academic lead for GEM.

The Years 3, 4 and 5 reps meet with staff in their Clinical Education Campuses as well as with staff in the Medical School to help resolve issues.

Direct Entry Rep

In Year 3, there is a rep to specifically support direct entry students joining the MBChB.

International Rep

There is an International rep to support all years of International students and their concerns.

Intercalation Rep

There is a rep to specifically support students who are intercalating or issues related to intercalation.

European Studies Rep

There is a European Studies rep to support all years of  European Studies students and their concerns.

Student Staff Assurance Committee (SSAC)

The SSAC meets twice a year and gives an opportunity for the reps to all meet together with key staff including: The Director of Undergraduate Medical Studies, Associate Director for Student Experience, Associate Director for Teaching and Learning, Associate Director for Student Wellbeing,  Associate Director for Academic Affairs, Associate Director for Progression, Year Leads, Lead for Assessment, Lead for Community Based Medical Education, Hospital Deans, Programme and Undergraduate Hospital Managers.

The reps report back on issues they have raised during the year and what progress has been made to resolve these issues. The SSAC meetings are chaired by a Programme Rep. Minutes from SSAC are posted on 1MedBuzz for students to see.

In addition to listening to the reps, we also gather your views in other ways. You will be requested to complete on-line questionnaires during the Programme, usually at the end of each Semester for Years 1, 2 and GEM Year students, or on a placement-by-placement basis for Years 3, 4 and 5. You may also be invited to help with other types of evaluation (e.g. participation in focus groups). We use all the information gathered from reps, surveys and placement evaluations to help us generate plans for improving the programme to suit your needs even better.
