If the matter concerns a local clinical education campus issue, for instance to do with a placement, your local clinical education campus Student Pastoral Support (SPS) team or Year Coordinator at your Clinical Education Campus will be able to help.

Educational Alert:
The Programme recognises that students may sometimes experience an adverse educational event or encounter a situation in the clinical environment where a member of staff or another student is acting in an unprofessional manner. It is important to the Programme that you know how to raise a concern if they see or experience something that worries you. For example, you may:

• See a member of staff or another student acting in an unprofessional manner.
• See a member of staff abusing a patient.
• Encounter discrimination against you or others because of race, sex or sexual orientation.

In such circumstances, as a first step, we encourage you to discuss your concerns with someone. This could be:

• A member of NHS staff (for example the consultant of your firm, any of the other junior or senior doctors who are supervising you).
• Your Hospital Dean.
• Your clinical academic advisor.
• The Student Pastoral Support (SPS) team at your Clinical Education Campus.
• Your local clinical education campus Undergraduate Education Unit.
• The Central University Student Pastoral Support (SPS) team based in the Stopford Building.

Because it is a key part of professionalism, we want to give you every opportunity to raise concerns, but recognise that you may be reticent to do so in your local environment. To aid with this, the Programme has introduced an “Education Alert” which is a direct way for you to alert the Programme about adverse circumstances affecting your education, or incidents you may have witnessed which concerns you.

Once you have completed the Education Alert, the Teaching and Learning Manager will be informed directly of this and will conduct further investigations on your behalf, confidentially if necessary. You will receive an acknowledgement that your Education Alert has been received and you will also be kept informed of progress and the outcome of the investigation.

Please remember, as with all communication by students on a professional training programme, incidents should be reported in a professional manner.
