In order to graduate you must satisfactorily complete:

• All Clinical Placement Blocks,
• the QE PEP assessment,
• satisfactorily complete all required workplace-based assessments (WBAs) and UPSAs, including Immediate Life Support (ILS) course completion.
• pass the Finals Examinations (or resit),
• Meeting specified attendance requirements.
• Prescribing Safety Assessment (PSA)
• have no outstanding professionalism concerns requiring an outcome at the School or Faculty Fitness to Practise Committee.

You will not be allowed to graduate should there be serious concerns over your attendance or professional conduct.

The Finals Examinations represent the first opportunity that you have to sit the Year 5 summative Applied Knowledge Test and the CCA. If you fail an element, Applied Knowledge Test or CCA, you must sit that element again, as a second attempt, in Finals Resit.

In implementing the UK Medical Licensing Assessment, students will be permitted no more than 4 valid attempts to take their Final Examinations.

The following rules of progression apply:

1. Students should meet all progression criteria for each year of the Programme within the same academic year, including years in which they are required to re-sit individual components due to unsatisfactory performance, unsatisfactory attendance or other circumstances, (with or without mitigation).                                                _  
2. Students who have mitigating circumstances accepted for an assessment will have that attempt declared null and void. They will re-sit that assessment at the same attempt as their mitigated attempt at the next available opportunity.  Please note that the National PSA examination adopts a ‘fit to sit’ policy and therefore mitigating circumstances does not apply to this assessment.                                                    _t
3. Clinical Placement Blocks must be Satisfactory by the end of Year 5. For further details please see: learning-in-clinical-placements and the placement remediation diagram that appears at the bottom of this page.                                                                                                       _
   • 3a. Students who fail one Clinical Placement Block will have the opportunity to re-sit a Clinical Placement Block during Block 7.      _
   • 3b. If a student fails two Clinical Placement Blocks (which may include Block 7) without mitigation during their first attempt at Year 5, they will repeat Year 5 in its entirety, including all assessments and placements. Placements will be taken as second attempt. Other assessments conditions will be as per Point 7. _
   • 3c. If a student fails two Clinical Placement Blocks (which may include Block 7) with mitigation accepted for one or both Blocks, they will be required to repeat Year 5 in its entirety, including all assessments and placements. Placements will be at first attempt and other assessment conditions as per Point 7.
   • 3d. If a student fails two Clinical Placement Blocks (which may include Block 7) being taken at second attempt in their repeat attempt at Year 5, they will be excluded from the Programme.          _
4. If a student does not complete all required UPSAs by the end of Block 6, they will be required to remediate by taking an additional clinical block, Block 7, during which they may complete outstanding assessments, as per the criteria for these assessments. If they do not successfully remediate in Block 7, they will have failed their Clinical Placements overall and will repeat Year 5 with their placements at second attempt and other assessment conditions as detailed in Point 7.                                                _
5. If a student is discontinued because of a failure to comply with specified attendance or engagement requirements without accepted mitigation then the student may be referred on to the Concerns Review Panel.                                                                                              _
6. Students who achieve a grade of Unsatisfactory in their QEPEP will have an opportunity to re-sit at a specified time on the Programme. If mitigation is accepted, this will be at first attempt and uncapped. Without mitigation this will be at second attempt, for a capped mark of Satisfactory and score capped to 50%.
   Students who achieve a grade of Unsatisfactory in their QEPEP at second attempt without mitigation will be excluded from the Programme.
   Students who achieve a grade of Unsatisfactory in their QEPEP at second attempt with mitigation will be required to repeat the year with conditions as per Point 7.                                                                     _
7. Students who are repeating a year of study (for whatever reason) are required to retake the entire year and complete all assessments, including those they had passed previously.  The specific assessment conditions will be confirmed in writing by the SMS Assessment Office.
   Please note for additional progression rules for students required to repeat a year of study:                                                                                                                     _            _ 
   • 7a.  The exception to this is the PSA, which does not need to be repeated within a repeat year if this has been passed within the last academic year.
   • 7b. Students will be permitted up to four valid attempts of MLA assessments (AKT/CPSA) in total across repeat years – the attempt number (first/second/third/fourth) of these assessments in a repeat year will be communicated to you in your assessment conditions. A repeat attempt will be capped to Satisfactory if the most recent previous attempt was Unsatisfactory. Further details on what is deemed a valid attempt is on the Overview of Year 5 Assessments page.
   • 7c. Students will be permitted a maximum of 4 attempts of the PSA (with no more than 2 sittings within an academic year). As a reminder, mitigating circumstances does not apply to the PSA.
   • 7d. Placements and QEPEP will be repeated at either first attempt (if these were previously passed) or at second attempt (if previously failed) with QEPEP capped to Satisfactory in this scenario – this will again be communicated to you in your assessment conditions. Students who fail either placements or QEPEP being taken at a second attempt will be excluded from the Programme.
   • 7e. As a general principle, whilst the number of attempts differ across the different Y5 assessments, exhaustion of attempts for any one component will result in exclusion even if there are attempts remaining of other components.
   • 7f. Students who are repeating a year for other reasons including: Following interruption, suspension, because their studies were discontinued because of a failure to comply with specified attendance requirements, or an outcome under the Faculty Fitness to Practise Procedure, will be referred to the MBChB Student Progression Committee (SPC) who will decide the attempt status of the required assessments.The SPC Committee will pay attention to the reason(s) for the referral to FTP when determining the return conditions.
   • 7g. Students who are repeating Year 5 with assessments or placements at second attempt must pass all of these satisfactorily to avoid exclusion from the Programme. If a student fails one Clinical Placement Block in this repeat year, they will still have the opportunity to re-sit the Clinical Placement during Block 7; if a student fails two Clinical Placement Blocks (which may include Block 7), they will be excluded from the Programme.
     
   • 7h. If a student’s studies are discontinued because of a failure to comply with specified attendance requirements, the Student Progression Committee (SPC) will consider the reasons given for non-attendance when deciding whether assessments should be taken at first or second attempt in the repeat year.
   • 7i. If however, a student is already repeating a year because of a failure to comply with specified attendance requirements, or following a return from interruption, then a failure to meet the attendance requirements in their repeat year (in the absence of accepted mitigating circumstances) will result in exclusion from the Programme.
   • 7j. Students who are repeating a year and who did not pass or complete all the European Studies components previously will not be allowed to complete these components in their repeat year; they will also revert to the standard MBChB programme.

8. Students who (i) have taken two or more years, consecutively, out of the Programme or (ii) have not satisfactorily completed all required elements of an academic year of study within the previous two academic years, for reasons of suspension, interruption, health, conduct or poor attendance, will be referred to the Student Progression Committee (SPC). The conditions for return will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Students will normally return to their last year of study on the Programme. In certain circumstances the Student Progression Committee (SPC) may decide that the student needs to return to an earlier year of the Programme in order to ensure their knowledge and skills are at the required level to progress.
