Please note: the final cohort of entry to Year 1 of the European Studies Programme took place in 2021-22. No further students will be admitted to the programme.

Students who are enrolled on the MBChB with European Studies Programme receive language tuition in French, German or Spanish during Years 1-4, delivered by the University’s Language Centre.

Progression to each year on the European Studies Programme is dependent upon passing the required language examinations. Arrangements for these are made by the University’s Language Centre.

In Year 5, students spend a period of time at one of our partner Medical Schools in Europe. This placement is arranged directly by the School of Medical Sciences Team. This placement is of 4 weeks duration and takes place during the Student Assistantship, normally in Block 6.

Additional fees

All students who join the European Studies Programme are required to pay a separate supplement in addition to normal tuition fees each semester. The supplement only accounts for a small proportion of the costs incurred by the School in order to provide language teaching and quality assured placements abroad. It is a contribution towards the cost of language teaching, equipment and the expenses involved in arranging quality assured placements abroad. The supplement also covers translation of documents, organisation of master classes from native speakers in medical specialities. The European Studies supplement is not a tuition fee; it is an additional charge set by the School. Therefore the supplement will be payable by students directly via the University’s e-store before each semester and is separate from the normal tuition fee.

For 2025-2026, the supplement is £146 per semester. This amount will be reviewed on a yearly basis and students on the European Studies programme will be notified of the charge in advance each year. Please note if you haven’t paid your fee by the required deadline this may affect your ability to continue on the ES Programme. Please note the fee is still payable by Year 5 students as it is a contribution not only to teaching costs but towards the arrangement of placements as described above.

Maintaining your performance on the MBChB programme 

Students on the ES Programme must be able to maintain their MBChB studies as well as their language studies. This includes monitoring of attendance in language lessons, and completion of specific assessments required by the MBChB programme, whilst students are on their Year 5 ES placement.

Withdrawal from the European Studies Programme

If a student is having difficulties balancing their language studies alongside their MBChB studies, they are advised to seek support and advice early from their language tutor, Year Lead/Hospital Dean, or European Studies Academic Lead, as applicable.
