The aims of PPD in Year 3 are to develop and demonstrate the following:

• Learn from experience and feedback and respond constructively to the outcomes of appraisals, performance reviews and assessments.
• Develop a range of effective professional strategies, such as: Reflection, debriefing, teamworking, responding to feedback, and asking for help to recover from challenges and setbacks.

Apply self reflective techniques to:

• Explore the complex medical needs, goals and priorities of patients, the factors that can affect a patient’s health and wellbeing and how these interact.
• Identify the need to adapt management proposals and strategies for dealing with health problems to take into consideration patients’ preferences, social needs, multiple morbidities, frailty and long term physical and mental conditions.
• Recognise the potential impact of attitudes, values, beliefs, perceptions and personal biases (which may be unconscious) on individuals and groups and identify personal strategies to address this.
• Learn and work effectively within a multi-professional and multi-disciplinary team and across multiple care settings.
• Demonstrate awareness of the importance of their personal physical and mental wellbeing and incorporate compassionate self-care into your personal and professional life.

It is of the utmost importance that all entries in your PPD Portfolios are completed with honesty and integrity and are based on your own experiences. Students must not plagiarise or fabricate material. All students are therefore required to complete a declaration to this effect, at the beginning of each academic year.

Your PPD Portfolio in Years 3, 4 and 5 continues with the same online structure as in your previous year(s). The sections of your Portfolio correspond to the GMC’s Good Medical Practice, and GMC’s Outcomes for Graduates and reflect the clinical learning environment of Years 3, 4 and 5.

Detailed guidance for maintaining your PPD Portfolio during Year 3 is available on 1Med Learn PPD pages and through the In-Context Guidance pages for each of the subsections, which you can readily access via your electronic PPD Portfolio. There will also be a clear summary of the Intended Learning Outcomes and the evidence that is expected in your PPD Portfolio to show that you have met them. There is a range of resources on 1Med Learn and 1Med Info within the PPD sections, to provide further support and guidance over a range of PPD Portfolio entries.

Please note that completion of each ILO must be demonstrated by separate evidence and you cannot ‘double count’ an entry across more than one ILO domain. It is also essential that you maintain your PPD Portfolio frequently during Year 3.

Role of Academic Advisors

The role of your Academic Advisor is described in the Additional Support in Years 3, 4 and 5 section.

Intended Learning Outcomes with clear indications of the associated evidence for each of the objectives that are expected in your PPD Portfolios are made available to you and your Academic Advisor at the start of Year 3. They are extremely useful as discussion points in meetings with your Advisors, whose clinical experience is an excellent resource to help you grow in your professional development.

Meetings with Advisors

These are mandatory. Your Advisor will act as a mentor and supporter and will help you develop as a reflective practitioner. They will also review your portfolio entries and give you feedback on your written reflections. Engagement in this process is an important part of your personal and professional development. Failure to attend these meetings and lack of engagement with the portfolio will lead to referral to the local PPD lead and central team, in order to provide any extra support or referrals required. Any student with ongoing concerns or an ‘unsatisfactory’ review in the academic year 23/24 will have a mandatory meeting with their CEC PPD lead at the beginning of the year.
