Building on learning introduced in Year 1, the modules you will work though this year are Mind and Movement in Semester 3 and Nutrition and Metabolism in Semester 4. In addition, Year 2 will assist you in your preparation for Year 3 where you will be immersed in clinical environments.
The University is committed to delivering blended learning. For some of your learning activities, you will be expected to complete preparatory online learning activities before attending face-to-face or synchronous classes. This is referred to as flipped classroom teaching and enables us to enhance your learning experiences by focussing face-to-face sessions on checking your understanding of theoretical knowledge and its application.
All students should familiarise themselves with the Programme’s guidance: Student ‘Netiquette’ for remotely-delivered teaching sessions in order to get the best out of virtual teaching sessions.
Team Based Learning (TBL)
As in Year 1, your Learning Agenda generated from the TBL opening session will drive your week’s learning. You will continue to build on your Bioscience, Behavioural and Social Science and Ethics and Law knowledge. This knowledge will be applied within learning experiences, such as Practicals and Early Clinical Experience and supported by resources.
Semester 3 TBL themes follow the same approach as introduced in Year 1. In Semester 4, we start preparing you for Year 3 by working through the weeks using a more clinically reasoned approach. This involves active analysis and discussion around the staged release of information for each clinical case, using an online opening activity.
Early Clinical Experience
See section Year 2 Early Clinical Experience for details.
Evidence Based Medicine (EBM)
Throughout Year 2, EBM continues to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary for understanding and interpreting medical research, and for producing your own research-related output. Much of what you will learn in EBM is directly applicable to your Personal Excellence Path (PEP) studies across the MBChB Programme.
Resources
A breadth of educational resources are provided to support your weekly learning. They align with the themes of the semester and provide an opportunity to learn from experts in the field. For further information, please see: 1MedLearn.
Personal and Professional Development
With the support of your Academic Advisor, you will continue to develop your reflective practice and ePPD Portfolio throughout Year 2. There is further PPD information on 1MedLearn, 1MedInfo and the Year 2 PPD section of the handbook.
Personal Excellence Path
This requires you to explore a biomedical/scientific subject of interest and produce a written report. For further information, please see information about the Year 2 PEP on 1MedInfo and also the PEP section of the handbook.
Practicals
These are an opportunity for you to explore the basic scientific principles underpinning the bioscience of your weekly themes. Clinical skills are also introduced within the laboratory environment and academics are available in the sessions to offer advice and support.
As in Year 1, your Anatomy studies and practical classes continue throughout Year 2. Physiology and Pharmacology practical classes in Year 2 are scheduled within Semester 3.
You are expected to prepare for these compulsory practicals by working through the learning materials provided prior to the sessions. See also: Laboratories.
