The University Student Services Centre (SSC) offers a one-stop shop for many student services.

For queries relating to any of the following please complete and/or refer to the SSC online enquiry form:

• Official Documents (Certificates and Transcripts);
• Student Immigration Queries.

There is also an online chat option that you can access on the Student Services Centre website.

Financial Support

In addition, the SSC can provide you with advice if you are experiencing difficulties with debt or hardship. The University Cost of Living Support Fund is available to eligible students during the academic year. In addition to this the MB ChB Programme has a Hardship Fund for students who are having difficulties meeting their living costs (food, rent, essential travel). Applicants should already have applied to the University’s own  Cost of Living Support Fund, if eligible, and provide evidence of the result of that application (or ineligibility) in their application to the Programme Hardship Fund.

Accommodation

You will need to arrange your own accommodation for each year of your study. For new students, Manchester’s huge range of University accommodation means there is something to suit everyone. New students should refer to the University’s online information regarding student accommodation.

If you choose to live in University accommodation, there is a system of wardens, tutors and advisors who can discuss any difficulties, whether related to your accommodation or not. Each residence will advertise details of its own advisory/tutorial system. If you have any general problems with your accommodation you can also contact the Accommodation Office.

From Year 3 onwards, the School advises that you arrange your accommodation within a commutable distance of your allocated Clinical Education Campus (CEC). You will attend placements at the CEC, the University and other linked clinical placement providers across the North West, including acute hospitals, general practice and community-based services. If you are going to be using public transport, it is a good idea to check routes to potential placements before you choose your accommodation. Please refer to the MBChB Programme Policy on Allocation to a Clinical Education Campus for further guidance and for lists of the associated placement locations for each CEC.

Manchester Student Homes is the University’s only officially approved housing bureau. Based in Fallowfield, it serves Manchester’s student community by providing information on good quality and well managed properties available in the private sector. If you have any problems concerning accommodation in the private sector (e.g. contracts with landlords, safety of premises), you can talk to the Accommodation Office or Manchester Student Homes. Further advice is available from the Students’ Union Advice Service.

Careers Service

The Careers Service provides confidential advice and information to students and graduates with a view to helping you improve your employability and begin to make plans for your future career. For further information please contact the Careers Service.

There is also careers advice on 1MedInfo that is written specifically for medical students, but which includes guidance on non-medical careers for medics, and many careers events are announced on 1MedBuzz.

University Centre for Academic English

If English is not your first language, studying and working in a clinical environment can be challenging. Accents, colloquialisms and idioms may make understanding your patients difficult. Students who find themselves in this position are therefore advised to seek support and guidance from the University Centre for Academic English. Students should seek this from the start of the medical studies, as it offers a wide range of English language courses and students can be guided as to the course best suited to their needs.

Please note: Problems with grasping English language will not normally be considered as sufficient mitigation in the event of failure at an assessment, so seek help early!

The University Centre for Academic English is based in the Samuel Alexander Building.

SafeZone is our mobile app designed to help keep you safe and give you extra peace of mind across campuses in the city. It is free to download and easy to use. You can use the app to alert University Security.

The University Security Service can be contacted if you have concerns about personal security, a theft or a disturbance on campus (0161 306 9966).
