Provision of iPads

The University of Manchester and the MBChB Programme supports the provision of iPads as a learning resource to all registered students who are based in a clinical setting (i.e. Years 3-5 of the MBChB Programme).

Because such a large proportion of the teaching and learning activities of the Programme are away from the University campus and its IT facilities, the use of iPads is intended to enhance students’ learning experience.

Loss, Breakage or Theft

For further information on what to do if your iPad is lost, damaged or broken, please refer to the ‘What to do if my iPad is lost, stolen or broken’ page on 1Med Info.

If your device is lost or stolen you must notify IT Services (0161 306 5544 or https://www.itservices.manchester.ac.uk/help/) as soon as possible. IT Services will immediately wipe any data and lock the device using the Mobile Device Management (MDM) software.

Your iPad is your responsibility and if it is lost, stolen or broken then you should replace it. We recommend you insure it against such incidents and there are a number of companies that offer cover specifically for electronic devices. If you already have house contents insurance, check with your insurers as you may find your iPad is already covered.

You can help retrieve your iPad by using the free Find my iPad app. This will send a message to the device so if someone finds it, they can get it touch as well as allow you to see where the device is on a map.

If you replace your University-issued iPad with a personal device at any point, it is essential that you get the MDM software re-installed on your new device. The MDM software is an important part of the agreement we have in the District General Hospitals (DGHs) in providing you with free WiFi – without this software you may be unable to access the networks provided by the Trusts specifically for students, or you will be breaking the Trust’s policies. To get your MDM profile re-installed on your new device, simply contact IT Services on the number above or raise a ticket via the Support Portal.

If you find yourself without an iPad and are unable to replace it, the Programme will offer you a used iPad that you can borrow for the remainder of your time on the Programme. This will have to be returned when you graduate or leave the Programme, but will allow you to access materials and submit forms whilst you are on the Programme. If you wish to make use of this service, please email us at onemed@manchester.ac.uk, stating your student ID number.

 Code of Conduct

When you receive your iPad from the Programme, you will also be given the iPads Code of Conduct and asked to sign this. You must adhere to this Code of Conduct whenever using your University of Manchester issued iPad or other tablet computers; this also applies to devices which have been privately purchased.

If considering requesting consent to record any audio or visual files, please refer to the Guidance on Recording Teaching and Learning Activities and Patient Interactions.
