As an MBChB student you must complete university registration at the start of each academic year. This is vital for you to start and remain on the programme for your studies.

Registration is the formal mechanism through which you are recognised as a student of the university and enables access to facilities, therefore it is extremely important that you fully complete the registration process prior to starting the first semester each academic year.

You must academically register before the start of the first semester of each academic year, even if you are not able to register financially at the same time. The deadline for full financial registration is 30 September 2025. See University Information on Registration

Students who do not complete financial registration by the University’s published final deadline will not be permitted to continue on the programme and in line with university policy, will be required to withdraw, interrupt or defer, as appropriate.

If you are not registered with the university:

• You are not insured and therefore you should not be undertaking laboratory work.
• You do not have the university’s consent to be on NHS property – you are not insured by the university to be on your teaching hospital’s premises or any other placement.
• You are not able to enter into any patient contact whatsoever; to do so would risk your continuation on the MBChB programme.

Your insurance is only valid for the official semester dates and programme elements of the MBChB programme, unless we authorise a placement outside of this; if you are on the wards or undertaking any other educational activities at any other time you are not registered as a medical student and therefore have no university insurance.  Therefore, for placements outside the programme other means of approval for admittance should be sought, i.e. via the appropriate Trust HR Department.

All New Students (including Direct Entry Students to Year 3 and GEM Students)

Your registration when first starting the programme is conditional on two key factors, Disclosure and Barring Service (and/or equivalent Police check for overseas students) clearance and having the necessary vaccinations.  Please see: University’s Student Occupational Health Service for details.

Returning Students

All returning students must complete university registration at the start of each academic year.  Registration for returning medical students into Years 3, 4 and 5 takes place earlier than the University’s main registration process to ensure that all elements of your registration are completed before the start of term so as not to prevent you from attending your clinical placements.

Details about registration, including fees, are sent out before the start of the first semester of each academic year – check 1Med notifications, and your email account for information sent by the University and School Team.

Tuition Fees and Outstanding Fines or Charges

Non-payment or a missed payment of tuition fees would result in you being listed as a debtor, as would debts such as outstanding fines or charges. For students with such debts a Negative Service Indicator (NSI) is placed on their student record.  It is the University of Manchester’s policy that any student who has a tuition fee debt outstanding to the University may not proceed to the next year of study, may be asked to temporarily suspend their studies until the outstanding debt is paid, and is not allowed to re-register nor graduate until the debt is discharged. Please note, MBChB Programme students are not able to suspend temporarily within an academic year and return within the same year whilst funding is being sought.  They would normally return to the next academic year to commence their studies once the tuition fee debt is paid. Non tuition fee debts are pursued separately directly with students by the Credit Control Department at the University.

Travel Bursaries

MBChB students in Years 3, 4 and 5 are provided with a travel bursary from the Programme to help with costs towards travel costs to clinical placements. This will be paid on completion of full (financial) registration with the University as long as this is completed by the relevant deadlines and student banking details have been completed on MyManchester. Students will be advised of these details by the School Team and information is also available on 1Med.
